Double for Gethings on final day of Welsh Racing Festival

Jockey Ciaran Gethings landed an impressive double on the third and final day of the DragonBet Welsh Racing Festival at Chepstow on Sunday.

The first of two convincing victories came aboard Mwabani in the DragonBet/EBF ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle (Qualifier) (Class 3), which brought trainer Jane Williams a long-awaited first winner of the season.

The 2/1 second favourite made virtually all until being joined by Lion Rose Sivola (5/4F) at the last hurdle. A stumble by the favourite after the final obstacle allowed Mwabani to regain the advantage and draw away to win by a comfortable 4¾ lengths.

Gethin’s second victory came in the feature DragonBet Cefnogi Rasio Ceffylau Cymreig Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) aboard Matty’s Getaway (9/2) who travelled effortlessly into the lead between the last two hurdles before pulling away to win readily by an impressive 9½ lengths.

In a different league!

The crowd was boosted by around 4,000 students courtesy of a Race Day Party organised by events business Invades, in which Arena Racing Company, owners of the racecourse, have a 50% stake.
