Today’s feature race at Bath, the £70,000 British Stallion Studs EBF Beckford Stakes (Class 1, Listed) over 1m 6f, was won in convincing style by Brilliant Star, trained by John & Thady Gosden.
The well-bred 3yo filly, who was the top-rated horse in the 12-runner field (OR: 102), overcame an absence of 122 days since her last run in the Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2) at Ascot to win by two lengths.
Jockey Robert Havlin maintained a prominent position as Lady Vivian set a fast pace before nudging his mount into the lead over a furlong out and keeping on well to the line
Havlin told Sky Sports Racing:
“We freshened her up and she’s never been on ground like this or over this trip, but everything in her pedigree suggested that it’s what she’d like. She still had to go out there and do it, but she travelled nicely and outstayed everything.
“She’s not run for a while and the ground is quite weird – a bit rough and a bit loose – but she’s a nice filly going forward. She cruised there going past the two furlong mark on the bridle and if she stays in training there’s some nice races for her next year.”
Brilliant Star had been well supported in the betting and started as the 11/8 favourite, continuing the trend of Beckford Stakes winners being towards the top end of the the market and under the care of some of the best trainers in the country.
